Control Evaluation

Dog_Paw_PrintYour Control Evaluation must be completed before starting Supervised Visits. This evaluation for dogs can be administered by an AKC approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Music City LOAL’s resident evaluator is listed on our resource page.

Control Evaluation and the Visit Evaluation must be administered by two different evaluators. Candidates for membership cannot evaluate their own pets.

Dog_Paw_PrintYour pet must be a minimum of one year old before beginning the certification process. If a rescue, re-homed or career change pet, it is strongly recommended you take a minimum of 6 months to bond with this pet and get to know its reactions in various situations.

Dog_Paw_PrintThe LOAL Control Evaluation tests the temperament of the dog and the amount of control the handler has in various situations. These guidelines are meant to give the evaluator objective criteria and to make the test as consistent as possible in all parts of the country.

Dog_Paw_PrintAll parts of the evaluation should be performed with the dog on a four foot leash with no prong, pinch or electronic collars. If the dog shows any type of aggression, the evaluation will be stopped and the dog disqualified. The handler may talk to and encourage the dog, but no treats may be used during the evaluation.

The 10-step Canine Good Citizen test is a non-competitive test for all dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds. The CGC award is not a prerequisite for membership with Music City Love on a Leash, but does evaluate many similar behaviors. Our control evaluations are performed by a chapter member, certified CGC evaluator.
